Missing status bar in door games?

Post by Spoffy »

Hey there,

This is the only possible bug I've noticed so far-- Door games in DOS are generally missing the status bar that's typically at the bottom of the screen (which typically shows the number of turns left, character name, time, etc. things like that). I can see it in the debug mode console but it doesn't show up in the main view. Not THAT big a deal, the games are still playable, but I thought I'd bring it up anyway. Thanks. :)

I'm not sure I quite understand what's missing. Can you send a screenshot of what it is supposed to look like? If you look at ATO (www.atodoors.com) and the beta of ATDT on the demo site you'll see I added a status bar at the top.

The information outlined in red, which usually includes the number of turns users have left for the day (hope this posts correctly).

Thank you! I'll download it and take a look. It's not one I've tested.

It's not the only game I've noticed that information missing at the bottom, but in a lot of cases it's not critical to the game (i.e. just the name and baud rate or whatever). the only thing that does show up there consistently is the number of turns remaining for the game, which would be nice to see so users aren't ambushed with suddenly running out of turns. I have everything set super high where i can already since i'm doing this just for friends, but it's still come up a couple of times.

A lot of these games have ways to see turns left in game of course, but it's often hidden in a menu and easy to miss. In any case, this isn't a critical thing at all, more of a quality of life thing, but thank you for taking a look into it anyway. :)

Are you sure that isn't the SysOp's status bar, when you're logged in locally? LORD has the same thing, but it's never shown to a caller. That's why you're seeing it in the diagnostic mode.

Edit: I COULD make a switch to where a caller sees it too, but that would function differently than it does on a BBS today.

Well... no, I'm not sure. That is my sysop account in the game in the screenshot, but I'm not logged in locally (I'm running the BBS off a DigitalOcean droplet, so I'm accessing it via my home computer). I never see that bar anywhere so far as I know.

Are you sure that information was never displayed to the user? That seems weird to me. Especially since it tells them how much time they have left in the game. But if you're sure that's how it used to be, I guess I could be wrong.

Looking at the source code for the door:

Conclusion:
Your screenshot is consistent with the source code. The large DOS screen shows the local SysOp status bar, while the smaller diagnostic caller screen shows only the game output.

The Clans already separates its local SysOp status display from the remote caller's terminal output.

The Clans uses OpenDoors to display a local SysOp status bar showing caller information, baud rate, time remaining, ANSI mode, and node number. It writes directly to DOS video memory, keeping the bar separate from remote output. BBS callers only see the game, not the status bar.

Okay, well that explains quite a bit actually. I'll just have to tell everyone that whoops, that information is apparently only for me. :) Thanks for looking into it nonetheless.

Do you want me to put the switch in on a per-door basis? It's no big deal to do it.
